As defined by the World Tourism Organisation, wellness tourism includes activities aimed at enhancing physical, mental, and spiritual well-being, such as yoga, meditation, Ayurveda, and spa treatments. Unlike traditional tourism, today’s travellers are increasingly healthconscious, seeking destinations that offer relaxation alongside well-being benefits.

Globally, tourism contributes over 10% of the world’s GDP and 7% of total exports, valued at more than USD 1.1 trillion. A growing segment within this industry is wellness tourism, which generated USD 32.5 billion in 2019 and is projected to expand to USD 207.9 billion by 2027, with an average annual growth rate of 21.1%.

History, Nature, and Culture for Wellness

The ancient Hindu sacred texts depict the Himalayas as a haven for Hindu gods and early sages in search of rest and meditation. In the present, visitors can attend monasteries or private facilities to experience teachings that have inspired many. Religious sites such as the Boudhanath Stupa and Swayambhunath Temple provide ideal settings for meditation and spiritual retreats.

Yoga, a cornerstone of Nepalese culture, is central to many retreats. These programs allow participants to immerse themselves in the practice, fostering harmony between the mind and body.

Ayurveda, Nepal’s ancient healing system, also plays a significant role in wellness tourism. Ayurvedic retreats offer personalised wellness programs, often including herbal treatments, detoxification, and dietary adjustments to restore balance.

Vipassana, an ancient meditation technique rediscovered by Buddha over 2,500 years ago, is widely practiced in Nepal. The Nepal Vipassana Centre offers transformative ten-day courses in self-purification, starting daily at 4:30 am and adhering to a strict regimen of silence and meditation.

To harness the potential of wellness tourism, Nepal must invest in healthcare infrastructure and promote wellness tourism enterprises.
