Nepal has decided to monitor the movement of foreign visitors using an electronic system. The Department of Immigration has developed a foreign citizen registration and monitoring (tracking) system to ensure the safety of foreign visitors to Nepal, facilitate access to information, control possible crimes, and support the promotion of Nepal’s tourism.
The department has announced that the system will be rolled out in three phases. It will be made mandatory in star hotels inside the Kathmandu Valley in the first phase, starting on September 17. In the second phase, starting from November 16, the system will be implemented in all star hotels, airlines, tours and travel companies, and money exchange services. After that, it will be expanded to all types of hotels, guest houses, and other public and private service-providing institutions.
The department has requested all public institutions and private companies providing services to foreign nationals to mandatorily join the system.
The government believes that this will make search, rescue, and security assurance easier during emergencies. It will also make information exchange more effective between security agencies, tourism entrepreneurs, and other concerned bodies, thereby contributing to the safe and organised development of the tourism sector.
