National Geographic Hails ‘Mithila Thali’ as a Top South Asian Local Dish

Mithila Thali has earned a place on National Geographic’s list of South Asia’s standout traditional dishes, bringing global attention to Janakpur’s food heritage. The magazine highlights the work of Nepali chef Santosh Shah, whose interpretation of Mithila cuisine now serves more than 500 customers each day.

The feature credits Shah for elevating local ingredients, home-style flavours, and traditional cooking techniques through a modern presentation that resonates with both Nepali and international diners. His growing reach reflects the rising global interest in Nepali cuisine.

Beyond the food, National Geographic describes Janakpur as a city rich in religious, cultural, and culinary traditions. The magazine notes the grandeur of Janaki Temple, its detailed artwork, and the vibrant presence of visiting pilgrims, presenting the city as a layered destination full of heritage and flavour.

International recognition for Janakpur is not new. Lonely Planet previously listed the city as an emerging hub for cultural, religious, and food tourism.

Shah has expanded Mithila Thali beyond Janakpur, operating outlets in Jhamsikhel, Naxal, and Gaushala under the brand “Mithila Thali by Santosh Shah”, including a vegetarian-focused branch. He also runs Janakpur Fish House in Naxal to showcase the region’s signature fish dishes. A new Mithila Thali restaurant is currently being prepared for launch in Birgunj.

This latest feature marks another step in bringing Nepali food culture to international audiences and strengthening Mithila cuisine’s place on the global culinary map.
