Stakeholders Discuss Tourism Growth, Challenges and Opportunities in Koshi Province

A stakeholder dialogue focusing on tourism development in Koshi Province has been held in Biratnagar, bringing together government officials, private sector representatives, tourism entrepreneurs, academic institutions, and students to discuss the sector’s direction, challenges, and opportunities.

The programme, titled Tourism in Koshi Province, was organised by Innovate Next Impact at the hall of the Ministry of Tourism, Forest and Environment. The discussion highlighted the provincial government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen tourism infrastructure and promote sustainable growth in the region.

Officials noted that the Koshi Tourism Year 2082 has contributed to building tourism awareness and strengthening structural foundations for the sector. The provincial government has been working to create long-term tourism strategies, with a strong emphasis on collaboration with the private sector. Participants highlighted that private businesses play a crucial role in expanding tourism services, promoting destinations, and improving visitor experiences.

Concerns were raised over the lack of reliable and comprehensive tourist data in the province, which has made it difficult to measure tourism growth and plan effective policies. Stakeholders stressed the need for improved data collection systems and policy reforms aimed at attracting higher-quality tourism while ensuring long-term sustainability.

Tourism entrepreneurs identified Indian visitors as the primary tourist market for Koshi Province. Discussions focused on the need for strategies that encourage Indian tourists to extend their stays and increase spending within Nepal, which could significantly benefit local economies.

Representatives from the hotel and homestay sectors highlighted the importance of cooperation between provincial and local governments. Participants agreed that tourism development requires coordinated efforts among government agencies, local communities, and private businesses. Strengthening community-based tourism and improving local participation were also identified as key priorities for ensuring sustainable tourism growth.
