Farmers in the Tanahun district have earned more than USD 31.2 million from orange sales this year, showing an increase compared to last year. According to agriculture officials, farmers earned about USD 3.1 million more than the previous year, when total sales were around USD 29.2 million.
Orange farming is carried out across 1,670 hectares of land in the district, with production recorded from 977 hectares this season. Farmers harvested a total of 11,821.7 metric tonnes of oranges. Out of this, 5,821.9 metric tonnes were sold through formal market channels, generating the reported income.
Several areas of Tanahun are widely known for commercial orange cultivation. Aanbukhaireni, Ghiring, Devghat, Bhimad, Myagde, Rishing, Bandipur, Byas, and Shuklagandaki municipalities are considered major pocket areas for orange farming. The suitable climate and soil conditions in these regions support strong citrus production, making Tanahun one of Nepal’s key orange-producing districts.
Most oranges grown in Tanahun are supplied to large markets such as Damauli, Pokhara, and Kathmandu. Traders from these cities often visit orchards directly to purchase the fruit. This has helped farmers avoid major marketing problems and reduced transportation and storage costs.
Local farmers have expressed satisfaction with this year’s production and sales. Many farmers said direct purchases by traders have made selling easier and more reliable. Agriculture officials believe the rise in orange sales reflects improved farming practices, favourable weather, and growing demand for locally produced citrus fruits.
