Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has said that information technology (IT) in Nepal has already become essential to people’s daily lives and routines.
While virtually addressing the International Information Technology Youth Conference 2025, organised by the National Youth Association Nepal on Sunday, PM Oli remarked that IT has become indispensable and necessary for human life and daily activities.
“We have reached a point where it is impossible to function without IT.”
He highlighted the importance of IT for making the country more systematic, building a well-organised society, making human civilisation more advanced, strengthening good governance, supporting governance, helping tackle corruption, and ensuring that public services and facilities reach the people.
“IT has become a mandatory necessity. IT must accelerate our development,” said PM Oli.
He reiterated that, keeping information technology in mind, the government has been moving forward with the slogan of Digital Nepal.
He recalled that during his first tenure as Prime Minister, the government had prepared the Digital Nepal Framework to make the entire nation technology-friendly, and mentioned that its implementation is now underway. He also noted that the government has recently introduced a policy related to Artificial Intelligence (AI).
“We must use information technology to make the country, society, and the entire human race more advanced and refined. We need to focus on utilising it to strengthen good governance, control corruption, broaden development, foster social harmony, and encourage innovation,” he said. “Last year, through online classes, we were able to improve the SEE (Secondary Education Examination) results by up to 14 per cent.”
He also mentioned that information technology has been increasingly applied in health and other sectors.
“However, we must remain cautious about the weaknesses and distortions that may arise from its misuse,” he said. Clarifying that the government supports press freedom and freedom of expression, PM Oli added that information harmful to society should not be disseminated.
