TikTok Collaborates with Election Commission

Short video platform TikTok has announced the launch of an in-app “Election Center” in Nepal. The feature has been introduced with the aim of making accurate, reliable, and official information easily accessible to users in view of the upcoming general elections.

According to TikTok, the service is a continuation of its global election integrity and ethics initiatives that have been implemented in more than 200 elections worldwide since 2020. As part of this effort, TikTok has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Election Commission of Nepal to promote electoral integrity and ethics. TikTok also reported that a capacity-building workshop was conducted at the Commission’s premises. The workshop discussed responsible digital participation, measures to control misinformation, and ways to strengthen understanding of election ethics among stakeholders.

The in-app “Election Center” has been developed in collaboration with the Election Commission. It includes information about Nepal’s electoral process, where and how to vote, ways to identify misinformation, and links to the Commission’s official sources. Special tags will be used on election-related content and searches to guide users toward the center.

TikTok stated that it has implemented strict policies to curb harmful and misleading information. Content will be monitored with advanced moderation technology and support from safety experts, and an “election taskforce” has been mobilized for Nepal. Measures such as labeling unverified material, removing it from recommendations, or warning users before sharing will be adopted.

The platform has also prohibited artificial engagement such as covert influence operations, fake identities, and bot networks. Actions taken against such activities will be made public through the Transparency Center, TikTok said. Content created using AI will be required to carry labels, and technologies such as C2PA Content Credentials will help identify AI material produced on other platforms as well.

TikTok added that it will continue to publish its initiatives and updates regarding the upcoming general elections through the Global Election Integrity Hub.
