Sergio Gor, the United States Special Envoy for South and Central Asia appointed by President Donald Trump, arrived in Kathmandu Wednesday evening. Gor is not only a close confidant of President Trump but also serves concurrently as the US Ambassador to India. His arrival marks the highest-level diplomatic visit from Washington to Nepal since Prime Minister Balendra Shah assumed office and formed his new government.
Gor’s dual portfolio elevates the significance of his visit, placing his diplomatic rank above that of US Assistant Secretary of State Samir Paul Kapoor, who visited Kathmandu earlier in April. The primary agenda of Gor’s visit reportedly encompasses expanding bilateral trade, fostering US investment in Nepal, and strengthening government-to-government ties in the evolving geopolitical landscape of South Asia.
However, the most anticipated aspect of the envoy’s trip is whether he will secure a high-level meeting with Prime Minister Balen Shah. PM Balen’s recent sweeping reforms and rapid policy shifts have drawn significant international attention, and a direct dialogue with Trump’s confidant could set the tone for future US-Nepal relations. As Washington closely observes the political transition in Kathmandu, Gor’s engagements over the next few days will be critical in shaping the strategic partnership between the two nations.
