Air pollution in the Kathmandu Valley has risen sharply in recent days, leaving the city covered in thick haze and raising health concerns among residents.
The sky over the valley has remained grey and hazy since early morning, with sunlight struggling to break through the dense layer of smog. Visibility across the city has dropped slightly, causing minor disruptions to transportation and some flight operations.
According to the Department of Environment, the valley’s Air Quality Index (AQI) has reached hazardous levels, with readings nearing 200. At this level, air quality falls into the “very unhealthy” category and poses significant health risks, particularly for children, older adults and people with respiratory conditions.
Many residents have reported irritation in their eyes, throat discomfort and breathing difficulties as fine dust particles and smoke continue to accumulate in the air.
Meteorologists say the spike in pollution is largely due to prolonged dry weather and the absence of winter rainfall, which normally helps clear pollutants from the atmosphere. Smoke from forest fires in different parts of the country has also drifted into the valley, further worsening air quality.
Kathmandu’s unique geography also contributes to the problem. Surrounded by hills, the valley often traps polluted air when winds are weak and rainfall is limited, allowing emissions to build up over time.
Vehicular emissions, especially from older diesel-powered vehicles, remain a major source of pollution. Construction dust, industrial activity, biomass burning and household fuel use also contribute to the high levels of fine particulate matter known as PM2.5.
Health experts have advised people to limit outdoor activities, particularly during peak pollution hours. Children, elderly residents and those with chronic respiratory illnesses have been urged to stay indoors when possible and wear protective masks if they must go outside.
With little rain or strong winds expected in the coming days, the polluted conditions may persist for a while longer.
