Nepal has secured a diplomatic milestone after the United Nations General Assembly approved a new international observance proposed by the country.
The UN on Tuesday adopted a resolution declaring April 15 as the International Day of Wellbeing, marking the first time an international day has been established based on a proposal initiated by Nepal.
Officials at Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the decision as a significant moment for the country’s presence on the global stage. The proposal received strong international backing, with 40 countries joining as co-sponsors of the resolution.
Several countries from South Asia, including India and China, supported the initiative. According to the ministry, the broad support reflected a growing international recognition of the concept promoted by Nepal.
From now on, April 15 will be observed annually around the world as the International Day of Wellbeing. The initiative aims to promote healthier and more inclusive societies by encouraging countries to strengthen their health systems and support overall wellbeing.
Nepal believes the new observance could also highlight the country’s traditional knowledge and practices related to health, mindfulness and holistic wellbeing. Officials say the recognition creates an opportunity to position Nepal as a global hub for wellness and wellbeing, potentially supporting tourism and cultural exchange.
The government also sees the initiative as part of Nepal’s effort to expand its soft power and international engagement. Diplomats say the successful adoption of the proposal demonstrates Nepal’s ability to bring global attention to issues linked to health, peace and human welfare.
The new international day is expected to encourage discussions and activities worldwide focused on improving wellbeing and building more inclusive and resilient societies.
