Nepal Police has arrested the chairman of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist). Oli was the Prime Minister when Generation Z youngsters protested against a social media ban and corruption on September 8. He was booked from his residence in Gundu, Bhaktapur, early this morning.
However, the police have admitted Oli to the hospital, citing health reasons.
The arrest comes a day after the formation of a new government under the leadership of Balen Shah, rapper and former mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City. The first cabinet meeting had decided to implement the immediate recommendations of the commission formed to investigate suppression and damages during the protests in September, prompting the arrest.
UML has decided to take to the streets to protest against the government’s move, calling it illegal and vengeful. The party has decided to launch legal and political resistance across the country.
Former Home Minister and Nepali Congress leader Ramesh Lekhak has also been arrested. However, his party is yet to come up with an official view on his arrest.
UML and Congress had formed a coalition government citing the need for stability, before being toppled by the protests.
