New Parliamentarians Take the Oath Amid Preparations at New Building

The newly elected members of Nepal’s House of Representatives are set to take their oath of office and secrecy today at 2 p.m. in the newly constructed multipurpose hall inside Singha Durbar. A total of 182 lawmakers from six political parties will be sworn in, including 38 from the Nepali Congress, 25 from the UML, 17 from the NCP, seven from the Labour and Culture Party, five from the Rastriya Swatantra Party, and one independent member.

Senior lawmaker Arjun Narasingh KC, who was sworn in by the president on Wednesday, will administer the oath to fellow members. Until the new Speaker is elected, KC will also oversee the first session of the House. The constitution requires that the Speaker and Deputy Speaker be elected within 15 days of the first meeting.

Preparations for the ceremony have been completed, with 61 members expected to take their oath in their mother tongue. Among them, 47 will use languages other than Nepali, including 17 taking the oath in Maithili. Lawmakers have been asked to arrive two hours early, dressed in formal or culturally significant attire.

The ceremony will take place in the new building, as the old parliamentary premises were damaged during a demonstration on 24 Bhadra, which involved vandalism and fire. Temporary arrangements in the new hall, including seating, the rostrum, and secretariat offices, have been completed, though some technical work remains. Security preparations have been finalised ahead of the event.

The schedule for the first official session of the House will be determined by the incoming government.
