Congress Makes Training Mandatory for Candidates

The Nepali Congress has decided to establish a new “Leadership Academy”, introducing a mandatory training system for those seeking public office under the party’s banner. The decision was taken during a Central Working Committee meeting held in Sanepa on Wednesday under party president Gagan Thapa.

The proposed Congress Leadership Academy will function under the party’s central policy, research, and training wing. It aims to build both internal and public leadership by offering structured courses and training sessions for party members. The curriculum will cover the party’s history, ideology, and guiding principles, along with its positions on economic, social, and development policies.

The academy will also focus on refreshing the knowledge of active and renewing members, helping them stay updated on party priorities and evolving policy issues. In addition, it plans to train elected representatives at local, provincial, and federal levels, while also preparing aspiring candidates for leadership roles in government.

A key feature of the initiative is a new requirement for those aiming to contest elections. Individuals seeking candidacy through the party will need to complete a public policy course at least three months before an election. Completion of these courses will be linked to the party’s candidate selection process and the allocation of responsibilities.

Through this move, the Nepali Congress is attempting to formalise leadership development and introduce a more structured pathway for political participation within the party.
