Ahead of the upcoming House of Representatives election, authorities have clarified that vehicles used for tourist transport can operate on election day only with prior permission. The arrangement is part of efforts to ensure smooth voting while allowing essential movement for tourists.
Under the Election Commission’s “Vehicle Permit Procedure, 2082″, vehicle operators must apply for approval at least two days in advance. In Kathmandu, requests are handled directly by the Commission, while in other districts they must be submitted to the relevant District Administration Office.
The rule applies to both domestic and international tourist transport vehicles. Although flights will continue as scheduled on election day, road travel for tourists will be regulated through this permit system to prevent traffic congestion near polling sites and ensure safety.
The procedure also covers other vehicles needing to operate on highways. Essential services, diplomatic missions, and vehicles for the Human Rights Commission are generally allowed to move, but most other vehicles, including commercial operators, require prior approval from authorities.
This measure aims to balance public convenience with electoral security. By requiring advance permission, officials can monitor vehicle movement, reduce disruption around polling stations, and maintain an orderly voting process.
Tourist operators and other affected drivers are encouraged to plan ahead and secure permits on time to avoid being stopped or fined on election day. Authorities stress that compliance with the permit system is crucial for both safety and the smooth conduct of the elections.
With these regulations in place, tourists will still be able to move across the country, but only under controlled conditions, ensuring that election day proceeds without unnecessary traffic or administrative complications.
