Nepal’s Young PM Makes Global Waves on Time 100 List

Prime Minister Balendra Shah, widely known as Balen, has been named in Time Magazine’s list of the 100 most influential people of 2026, marking a significant moment for the country’s political landscape.

The international publication included the 36-year-old leader in its “Leaders” category, highlighting his rapid rise from a hip-hop artist to Nepal’s youngest prime minister. His political breakthrough came during the recent general elections, where strong youth support and growing public frustration with traditional political figures played a key role in his victory.

Time’s recognition places Shah among some of the most prominent global figures, including Donald Trump, Xi Jinping, and Claudia Sheinbaum, as well as leaders from business, technology, arts, and sports.

Shah, who holds a degree in civil engineering, first gained national attention during his tenure as mayor of Kathmandu. His work in improving waste management, education, and healthcare was seen as a shift toward more results-driven governance. With his move to national leadership, expectations are high for him to expand these reforms across the country.

The magazine also pointed to his rise as a challenge to entrenched dynastic politics in South Asia, reflecting a broader shift toward alternative leadership in the region. His growing influence is being closely watched as Nepal navigates political change and public demand for accountability.

The inclusion signals not just personal recognition for Shah but also a moment of global visibility for Nepal’s evolving political direction.
